Revolutionizing Music with the Violin
BLACK VIOLIN
LVPAC Presents
November 16 and 17, 9:30am and 11:00am
To most people, jazz, hip-hop, funk, and classical are musical genres. But to the revolutionary music group Black Violin, they’re nothing but ingredients. Using interactive improvisational elements, Black Violin creates a unique performance targeted at reaching and engaging young people through their unique blend of music. Combining a daunting array of musical styles and influences to produce a signature sound that is not quite classical, not quite hip-hop, this group of two classically trained violinists and their DJ is redefining the music world – one string at a time. With influences ranging from Shostakovich and Bach to Nas and Jay-Z, Black Violin breaks all the rules, blending the classical with the modern to create something rare – a sound that nobody has ever heard, but that everybody wants to feel.
But beyond all the glitz and glamour, the members of Black Violin just want to give children the same opportunities that they had. With school music programs being cut all across the country, the group is concerned that young people will not have the benefit of music as a positive alternative to other, more destructive pursuits. With this in mind, they have embarked upon a campaign to show children and teens that they are capable of expressing themselves in ways they have never dreamed. In an age where music is coming to be more and more defined by the labels given to it, Black Violin shows that music does not exist within a box, but rather exists in another space – one as open and unrestrained as the minds that produce it. Grades 4 -12.

Summing Up LVPAC’s Educational
Outreach Program
We believe that our mission to bring world-class arts and entertainment to the Tri-Valley includes providing school districts and private schools across the region with access to performances and artists that will change young people’s lives. Working in partnership with teachers, administrators, parents and students, the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center hosts a wide range of arts education specific performances in the Bankhead Theater and at local schools (in-school events are offered at no cost) and provides workshops, study guides, master classes and teacher development opportunities using the artists that appear on our stage. During our first two seasons, over 42,000 students from across the Tri-Valley enjoyed performances at the Bankhead Theater or their school. LVPAC’s long term goal is to help integrate the arts into the standard curriculum, enhancing learning and creative thinking, along with cognitive and social skills, and assisting teachers to meet California VAPA Standards. We hope to see you and your students among the arts education patrons this school year!

LVPAC Student Tickets Program
Our Student Ticket Program was created through an anonymous grant from a Livermore family to underwrite discount tickets for all LVPAC Presents events. Children ages 2-17 attend performances featuring world-class visiting artists in music, theater and dance for about 1/3 of the regular ticket price. This gift makes it affordable for parents to share the performing arts with their families. Recognizing the value of this new program, the Bill King Memorial Fund, in conjunction with the Livermore Y Men’s Club, subsidized student tickets, and have also recently contributed to the Arts Education Fund. |
